Athens stump grinding cost: what the inch rate misses
A per-inch number is a starting point, not a price to clear the yard. In Athens, ask what happens to the chips, roots and hole before you compare bids.

Use the same scope for every bidder. Old published ranges are context, not a substitute for an on-site price.
Measure the stump, not the tree
Measure the diameter across the widest part of the remaining stump at the cut surface. Take a photo with a ruler or tape and note any flare, multiple trunks or exposed roots. A contractor may use a different measurement point: ask for the basis in writing.
Use the published rate carefully
ProMatcher lists $3.07–$3.31 per diameter inch in Athens for grinding 6–8 inches below grade. A 24-inch stump would calculate to $73.68–$79.44 at that rate. This is an August 2018 research-team estimate, not a 2026 bid; the source expressly excludes minimum service charges, surface roots, travel charges and multiple-stump discounts.
Define the finish you want
Do you want to plant grass, place a garden bed or build where the stump stood? Ask how deep and how wide the grinding will go; whether exposed surface roots are included; who removes chips, adds clean soil and levels the area. Grinding the stump does not mean all underground roots are excavated.
Confirm access and underground lines
Send photos of gates and the approach from the street. Ask the crew what machine can reach the stump without damaging paving or landscaping. Georgia 811 says its members mark public utilities, not private lines such as irrigation and landscape lighting; discuss a locate request and private lines before ground disturbance.
A common price question
Why is my quote higher than a per-inch calculation?
The rate is from 2018 and excludes several real job costs. A company may set a minimum for mobilizing a grinder, charge for narrow access or haul-away, or quote roots separately. Ask for the total and every inclusion. Do not multiply an old unit rate and treat it as a promised 2026 price.
