Walk the full drop zone

OSHA identifies falling objects, traffic, aerial lifts and power lines as tree-care hazards. Ask the crew to show where sections will land, how a fence, roof and nearby trees are protected, and whether workers can stay out of the fall area. A crane is one possible method, not a quality certificate.

Measure access and ground protection

Have each bidder explain where equipment, trucks and chipper can reach, whether ground mats are planned, and who repairs ruts, pavement or landscaping. A tight gate, slope or soft lawn may change equipment. Ask for alternate methods instead of assuming a crane is mandatory or always more expensive.

Check public-space and tree approvals

Athens-Clarke’s 2026 road/lane/sidewalk closure form calls for a right-of-way encroachment permit first and a traffic-control plan. Ask Traffic Engineering about the particular setup and current process if a truck, crane or exclusion zone needs public space. Separately check the parcel’s tree-removal path with Planning.

Get an apples-to-apples total

Require the same description of tree/diameter, rigging approach, crew and equipment time, public-space coordination, log hauling, chips, stump, cleanup and any follow-up visit. A number from a generic large-tree price page is not a local bid; compare on-site quotes and exclusions.

How much more does a crane add to an Athens tree-removal quote?

There is no reliable standard surcharge. Equipment, setup, access, street controls and section-by-section work vary by site. Have bidders state whether a crane is in the price, what triggers extra time and whether a non-crane plan is practical. Do not select a risky method solely by the lower total.

Ask for a sketched work and traffic zone, protected surfaces, utility coordination, the full haul/stump scope and current insurance proof. Confirm any public-space approvals before fixing a work date.
