Separate ground cleanup from felling

A homeowner may be able to move small, already-fallen branches in a clear, dry yard. That does not make climbing, cutting a tensioned limb or dropping a standing trunk safe. Keep everyone away from storm-loaded wood, leaning trees, roofs and traffic; ask a trained crew to plan controlled work.

Treat wires as a stop point

OSHA describes fatal electrical injuries from saws, branches and felled trees contacting power lines. A line can energize nearby wood or ground. If any branch could touch a wire, do not climb, pull or cut it. Contact the serving utility and use emergency reporting for a downed line.

Check the Athens-Clarke parcel before work

The county’s June 2026 residential guidance distinguishes a single-family lot under one acre from an over-one-acre lot where removal of five or more trees needs a recording application. Approved plans, overlays, multifamily parcels and street trees can differ. Ask Planning about the exact address rather than assuming owner-operated work bypasses local rules.
